West Somerset Railway Taunton Minehead East Somerset Railway Cranmore Mendips

Somerset has two steam railways; one in East Somerset and one in West Somerset. The East Somerset Railway is based in Cranmore near Shepton Mallet and runs to Mendip Vale. It's a picturesque route through the Mendip countryside. The West Somerset Railway runs from Taunton up through the Quantocks and along the Somerset coast at Watchet and finally to Minehead.

Both steam railways run special events such as children's Thomas the Tank Engine days, Santa Specials and adult events like Murder Mystery journeys. For railway enthusiasts you can book yourself on a steam locomotive driving course.

West Somerset Railway

The West Somerset Railway is the original broad gauge Great Western Railway line that runs from Taunton to Minehead between the Quantock Hills, Exmoor and the Brendon Hills. Historic steam locomotives, coaches and wagons are used to travel this picturesque route and makes a fun day out if you're a steam engine enthusiast or if you just want to sit back and enjoy the views.

Throughout the year the railway run special events such as Santa Specials, dining train journeys, murder mystery trains and jazz and swing trips. There's also the Brunel Buffet car at Minehead station. You can organise special functions of your own such as weddings and parties or you can book groups on the to the regular services. Groups of more than 16 receive a 15% discount. There is a 15% discount for senior citizens.

For the real steam engine and railway enthusiasts, West Somerset Railway organise one and two day courses. You can stoke the coal engine or drive a locomotive. Courses are designed for different levels of experience as well as a taster session.

Passengers in wheelchairs can be accommodated on the trains and disabled toilets are available in the Lorna Doone carriage (seats can be booked in advance). East Somerset Model Railway

The East Somerset Railway is based in Cranmore in Somerset, just three miles east of Shepton Mallet. It was opened as a broad-gauge line in 1855 with a line running from Witham to Shepton Mallet in 1858. It was sold to Great Western Railway in 1874 until passenger services were withdrawn in 1963. Then in 1967 the artist, David Shepherd, better known for his realistic animal paintings bought two steam engines and based them at Cranmore which led to the station and track being restored. It finally opened as East Somerset Railway in 1974.

Today the line runs between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. There is a programme of events throughout the year including special events at Easter, Thomas the Tank Engine days and Santa Specials. You can book a "Wine and Dine" trip on the train with special offers on Mother's Day and Christmas. Murder Mystery evenings are also held regularly. If you want a more hands-on experience you can try the "Driver-for-a-Fiver" event. You get to drive an engine up and down the sidings. The East Somerset Railway enthusiasts also run Footplate Courses for a more in depth driving experience.
