South East Somerset Tourist Information

South East Somerset is dotted with picturesque, historic market towns with medieval centres that haven't changed in centuries. This is the stronghold for the golden Ham stone built buildings that were important agricultural and commercial centres in their day.

In the old tradition regular markets and fairs are still held in these market towns. These small towns and villages are great for traditional pubs and inns as well as tearooms and cafes to keep you fed and watered as you explore the area. You also find holiday accommodation in character cottages of Ham stone or with thatched roofs that still contain original period features.

Wincanton Tourist Information

Wincanton was an important market town based on its weaving industry. It is renowned for its old pubs and inns and churches. Many of the inns are a legacy from when the town was a busy stop on the stage coach route. Today Wincanton is becoming favoured by antique hunters and as a base for those wanting to explore the Blackmore Vale countryside.

There's plenty to keep you occupied in and around Wincanton. Wincanton Racecourse lies between Wincanton and Bruton and makes a fun day out. It also has a pay and play golf course if you want to escape the shops. Not to be missed is the Wincanton Carnival, one of the Somerset Guy Fawkes Illuminated Carnivals that take place in Autumn.

Castle Cary Tourist Information Somerset

Castle Cary is a showcase of historic buildings built out of local Ham Stone - the stone gives the town its golden colour. It is named after the stream that flows by it, the Cary and there was once a Norman Castle built in the 12th century but it appears to have become mere memory only a hundred years after that. It was behind the horse pond which remains today.

Castle Cary was a medieval market town which became prosperous from its production of horsehair stuffed seating which amazingly continued until the 20th century!

Bruton Tourist Information Somerset

Bruton is an interesting historic town on the River Brue. Its architecture spans six hundred years and the town has retained much of its medieval charm. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and accommodation making Bruton an excellent base from which to explore South Somerset and the old county of Wessex.

Bruton is on the Heart of Wessex train line which serves several small towns and villages in Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire as well as Bath and Bristol.
