City Sightseeing Tour Bath Attractions

The historic centre of Bath is actually quite compact and is principally found along the banks of the River Avon and heading uphill to The Circus and The Royal Crescent. The City of Bath has been designated a World Heritage Site for its thermal spa that was founded by the Romans and the neoclassical Palladian Georgian buildings.

A good introduction to the sights and attractions in Bath is to take an open top bus tour around the city. Buses run an audio tour of Bath (in several languages) so you can pinpoint many of the famous sights. The tour takes just under an hour in total.

Your ticket allows you to hop on and off the bus at any of the stops around the city. So you can get the bus up to the Royal Crescent, get off and have a look at the Royal Crescent and visit No 1 The Royal Crescent Museum, walk along to The Circus and go to the Fashion Museum, then pick up the bus again at another stop to see more sights. It certainly saves your legs tramping up and down the hills!

The ticket is valid for 24 hours and there is also another tour that you can do on the same ticket to see some of the sights around Bath such as Claverton Down. The bus ticket also gives you discounts to other attractions like the Roman Baths, The Fashion Museum and The Jane Austen Centre.

Bath Walking Sightseeing Tours

If you'd rather look round on foot you can take a free guided tour that leaves from outside the Pump Room next door to the Roman Baths. These run Sunday-Friday at 10.30am and 2pm and at 10.30am on Saturdays. The tours last for around two hours and you don't need to pre-book, just turn up at the main entrance to the Pump Room. Groups should contact the Mayor's Office to book in advance. The Mayors Office, Guildhall, Bath. Tel: 01225 477411. Fax: 01225 477408.

Other guided tours are available for a small fee such as Jane Austen Walking Tours (Tel: 01225 443000) that take you to some of the places Jane visited and lived during her three year stay in Bath, Ghost Walks of Bath (Tel: 01225 350512) to meet some of those residents that just refuse to leave, and the excellent Bizarre Bath which takes an alternative, comic look at the sights and history of Bath (Tel: 01225 335124). Check the links right for more guides in and around Bath.

Also check out the Visit Bath website for Mp3 Audio Tours that you can download if you want to do a self-guided tour around the city.

Bath Boat Trips

Boat trips are another way of seeing Bath and the surrounding countryside. Boat trips travel up the River Avon to various destinations such as Bathampton and you can get fantastic views of Pulteney Bridge as you depart.

Pulteney Bridge is one of the iconic images of Bath. It spans the River Avon and was completed in 1773. It is most noted as being one of only a few bridges in the world with shops across the full span of the bridge on both sides.

You can also hire boats for private function and parties.
