Yeovil is the main centre for South Somerset. It makes a good base for exploring both Somerset and Dorset as it's near both borders.

The town itself is a good shopping centre with a wide range of cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants. There is also a good choice of accommodation in the town centre and in its suburbs where you'll find more traditional accommodation in the older period houses.

Yeovil Tourist Information Somerset

Yeovil is an old Anglo-Saxon name derived from the Celtic word for "forked river". The River Yeo flows around the east of the town. Yeovil is the main centre for South Somerset. It is a modern, busy town famous as the home of Westland Helicopters and Yeovil Town Football Club, the Glovers, a reference to the past glove making industry that supported the town in the 1800s.

Today Yeovil is a good shopping centre with a wide choice of high street stores, cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs. There is a good range of accommodation including hotels, bed and breakfasts and guest houses. The cheaper accommodation is outside the centre of the town in the suburbs where you can find very good quality bed and breakfast in period town houses.

In the centre of town is the Yeovil Heritage and Visitor Centre. Not only can you get all your tourist information on South Somerset here, but the Heritage Centre has a wide range of displays relating to prehistoric finds in the area, the Roman occupation through to the various industries that have supported the town over the centuries. The Centre also puts on a range of exhibitions throughout the year.
